Every time Phyllis Barnaby sees\u00a0or hears anything related to\u00a0The Salvation Army, she gets\u00a0emotional. It is a reminder of the\u00a0support and care she received from\u00a0the organization at a young age.\u00a0As a way to give back, Phyllis now\u00a0contributes to the Army whenever\u00a0she gets the chance.<\/p>\n

Unforgettable Gesture<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a child, Phyllis\u2019 life was\u00a0challenging. While living in the\u00a0small and remote community of\u00a0Buckfield, N.S., her mother had to\u00a0raise 10 children with very little\u00a0means, living off the land and with\u00a0no running water.<\/p>\n

Due to her family\u2019s situation,\u00a0someone within their community\u00a0decided to make The Salvation Army\u00a0aware of it. Since that moment,\u00a0Phyllis\u2019 life was moved in a way she\u00a0will never forget.<\/p>\n

\u201cEach year for several years, the\u00a0Army delivered Christmas dinners\u00a0and presents to each one of us. You\u00a0should\u2019ve seen my mother\u2019s face; a\u00a0relief always came over her knowing\u00a0she was going to be able to cook a\u00a0turkey for us on Christmas Day,\u201d she\u00a0says.<\/p>\n

Phyllis recalls one specific year in which she was especially moved by The Salvation Army\u2019s work. On the day her family was supposed to receive their Christmas hamper, a blizzard hit their community. But despite the treacherous conditions, a Salvation Army member drove to their town and even walked up the hill to where their house was located in order to deliver their Christmas dinner and gifts. It was a gesture Phyllis remembers fondly to this\u00a0day.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor somebody to drive through\u00a0dangerous roads, in those\u00a0conditions, and do all that for us?\u00a0It was mind-boggling,\u201d she says.\u00a0\u201cHad it not been for this individual\u2019s\u00a0commitment, we would not have had\u00a0Christmas that year.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Importance of Kindness<\/strong><\/p>\n

As time passed, things got better for Phyllis and, alongside her, The Salvation Army was always there. She moved to Halifax and got a job as a ward clerk at the former Grace Maternity Hospital, founded and run by the Army. She describes her experience working there as a \u201cfull circle\u201d moment. It meant so much to her that she decided she wanted the hospital chaplain to conduct her wedding.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hospital\u2019s chaplain got special permission to marry my husband and me after I asked her to. That\u2019s how much The Salvation Army means to me,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Salvation Army helps everyone, no matter who they are.\u201d PHYLLIS BARNABY<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Thanks to the help she received, Phyllis has made it a priority to contribute to the Army. She now works as a residence manager and, together with her co-workers, she hosts an annual toy drive. Additionally, Phyllis donates to every Salvation Army kettle she passes by. She says the Army is the charity she likes to contribute to the most, and that the help she received throughout her childhood taught her and her siblings that it is important to be kind.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Salvation Army showed me the meaning of giving,\u201d Phyllis sums up. \u201cThey help everyone, no matter who they are. They taught me that it is important to be nice to people, and love everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n
