Caf\u00e9s and community centres are examples of third places, but in a world where it\u2019s easier to post your thoughts to strangers than it is to talk to them, it\u2019s growing increasingly difficult to find judgement-free spaces for interaction in our communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">This is why The Salvation Army\u2019s new program, Encounter Caf\u00e9s, is so important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">Encounter Caf\u00e9s is a series of themed caf\u00e9s aimed at meeting specific needs identified in the community. Hosted by The Salvation Army\u2019s Encounter Church, caf\u00e9s such as Time with Tots Caf\u00e9 and Seniors Caf\u00e9 offers Halifax Regional Municipality residents a chance to gather in a safe and fun space while interacting and connecting with others over a shared interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">\u201cEncounter Caf\u00e9s is about bringing the community together,\u201d says Kassie Yarn, caf\u00e9 coordinator. \u201cWe know that seniors battle with loneliness every day, parents on fixed incomes struggle with a lack of childcare, new Canadians seek acceptance and safety as they learn and practice their English skills, and the needs go on. Our goal is to meet these needs and give hope to our community through Encounter Caf\u00e9s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">It&#8217;s early days, but Encounter Caf\u00e9s is off to a strong start. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and attendees have expressed their thankfulness towards The Salvation Army for giving them this opportunity to connect (or reconnect) with their community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">Examples of this include parents at the Time with Tots Caf\u00e9 sharing how much of a struggle socializing their children during COVID was, and how grateful they are for the Caf\u00e9 for allowing them to relax and talk with other parents while their children play together. Or parents expressing their appreciation for having a free tutor\/place for their kids to study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">At its heart, The Salvation Army Encounter Caf\u00e9s is about demonstrating love through service to a community with more than \u201cwords and speech\u201d, but with \u201cactions and truth\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">\u201cIf we hear the people\u2019s needs and simply tell them that we hope things get better, that\u2019s being polite,\u201d Kassie says. \u201cBut if we hear the people\u2019s needs and do something about it, that\u2019s love. So, the Encounter Caf\u00e9s is our way to love the people in our community. Simple as that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">Currently there are five Encounter Caf\u00e9s being offered, with the following times and dates:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">Seniors Caf\u00e9:<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\"> Mondays from 10 a.m. -11:30 a.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">Time With Tots Caf\u00e9:<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\"> Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">English Conversation Caf\u00e9:<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\"> Tuesdays from 1:30 p.m.-3 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">Study Caf\u00e9:<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\"> Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3 p.m.- 5p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">Alpha Caf\u00e9:<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\"> Thursdays from 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">If you are interested in signing up for an Encounter Caf\u00e9, you can email Caf\u00e9 Coordinator Kassie Yarn at kassie.yarn@salvationarmy.ca for more information.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s no secret that the exponential growth of the internet and the aftereffects of COVID-19 have damaged society\u2019s \u201cthird places\u201d\u2014 physical location other than work or home where people can connect with others.
