In Summerside, P.E.I., volunteers and team members from The Salvation Army were recognized as COVID Warriors by the province\u2019s Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Antoinette Perry.<\/p>\n
Among those that received this honour were Salvation Army volunteers Kathy Cotton and Brenda Mumma and community family services worker Darlene MacDonald.<\/p>\n
The province\u2019s COVID Warrior Award program recognizes Islanders and Island organizations who have made a significant contribution to their community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Demonstrating exceptional leadership, performing outstanding acts of service, and helping make a major difference in the lives of their neighbours, co-workers, and others by providing assistance and lessening stresses.<\/p>\n
Kensington Food Bank coordinators Paul and Theresa Cousins have worked with Kathy, Brenda, and Darlene over the last four years through The Salvation Army\u2019s partnership with the food bank and were the ones that nominated them as COVID Warriors. \u201cThis award was for people who went above and beyond in their community \u2013 and we thought of them immediately,\u201d shared Theresa. \u201cThose three keep people going, happy and fed through their work at The Salvation Army.\u201d<\/p>\n
Excitement and disbelief came to mind when they found out they were being recognized as COVID Warriors. \u201cWe were shocked and honoured to receive this award,\u201d said Darlene, Salvation Army community family services worker. \u201cIt is one thing to be recognized among your team, but it is an incredible feeling to be recognized by members of your community.\u201d<\/p>\n
Combined, Kathy, Brenda and Darlene have worked with The Salvation Army for over thirty-five years. They became great old friends during that time, and their bond was certainly tightened as they managed their location with a smaller team during the pandemic. \u201cWe stayed on during COVID-19 because we had been here the longest, but we keep coming back because we love what we do,\u201d shared Brenda.<\/p>\n
Recipients were also thanked on behalf of The Salvation Army for their contribution to the community they serve and the tremendous work that they do.<\/p>\n
