The Salvation Army has partnered with Square Roots to bring more than 3,000 lbs of fresh produce each week to low-income families in Halifax.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Square Roots<\/a> is a local non-profit that aims to reduce food waste and food insecurity Nova Scotia. When they were in need of a place to package and distribute their weekly produce delivery, they reached out to The Salvation Army Fairview Citadel<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we found out they needed a place, we offered our building,\u201d says Captain Brent Haas. \u201cAnd that was just the beginning of a wonderful partnership.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The two groups are working hand-in-hand to make this program a success. Each week, once the need is known, Square Roots orders produce from local farmers to be delivered to a location in Sackville. Salvation Army volunteers pick-up the produce and deliver it to Fairview Citadel, where it is packaged by Square Roots volunteers. Then, on Saturday mornings, volunteers from both groups distribute to the families who need it the most.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been an incredible relationship that\u2019s formed,\u201d explains Brent. \u201cIt shows the impact we can have when we collaborate and everyone brings their piece to the table. We can do so much more together than any one group could ever do on their own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the partnership is only into its fifth week, The Salvation Army Fairview Citadel is hoping that it one that will last for years to come.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBy working together we’re doing so much more than one group could ever do alone. We need to continue to help each other long after the pandemic ends.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
