In June of 2019, The Salvation Army in Fredericton launched Operation Senior Food Box Delivery \u2013 a program to bring groceries to seniors and help combat their loneliness with a visit. Little did they know this thoughtful program would have to quickly expand to help those impacted by COVID-19<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re delivering food to anyone who needs it right now,\u201d says Susan Strickland, family services coordinator. \u201cAnd our deliveries have gone up four times.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

“Everyone stays safe”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Due to protective measures being put into place, many who typically visit the food bank by bus, or get a ride with a friend, no longer have transportation to the food bank location. So the team decided to extend their senior program and offer the delivery of food and household items to all.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen someone is in need, they call our office and we prepare the box. Then volunteers drop it off at their doorstep or the curbside,\u201d explains Susan. \u201cThis way everyone stays safe and there is no contact.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the program has expanded, seniors in particular still benefit as many are afraid to leave their homes due to their level of vulnerability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne elderly lady told me she was scared to go out. I can\u2019t even imagine what that\u2019s like,\u201d says Susan. \u201cAnother left us a voicemail just to thank us again. It shows how necessary this service is.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“We’re going to help regardless of the situation”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the first seven month of the program volunteers made 28 deliveries. But in the past three months alone they have delivered more than 45 food boxes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe started at once a month now we’re making two deliveries a month, but I can see that going up to weekly in the near future,\u201d explains Susan. \u201cThe need increases every single day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Once the pandemic ends, they plan to continue to run Operation Senior Food Delivery and resume the senior visits. But for now, they will continue to meet the increased need in the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re in the business of helping people. So we\u2019re going to help regardless of the situation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
