{"id":11355,"date":"2026-09-18T08:44:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-18T08:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/salvationarmy.ca\/atlantic\/2026\/09\/the-things-you-dont-see-can-change-everything\/"},"modified":"2026-09-22T15:32:37","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T15:32:37","slug":"the-things-you-dont-see-can-change-everything","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/salvationarmy.ca\/atlantic\/2026\/09\/the-things-you-dont-see-can-change-everything\/","title":{"rendered":"The Things You\u00a0Don\u2019t\u00a0See Can Change Everything\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>by Simran Rambhia<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are some things you notice right away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A table filled with food.&nbsp;<br>A child&nbsp;is opening&nbsp;a Christmas gift.&nbsp;<br>A cup of hot chocolate warming cold hands.&nbsp;<br>Laughter filling a room.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then there are&nbsp;the things&nbsp;you may never notice at all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An elevator that reaches the ground floor when the power goes out.&nbsp;<br>A door that opens when someone needs to get out.&nbsp;<br>A safety system quietly standing ready, just in case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At&nbsp;<strong>L\u2019Abri&nbsp;d\u2019espoir<\/strong>, a safe shelter and transitional housing facility for women in Montreal, care can look like both.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the 2025 holiday season, 47 women and seven children staying at&nbsp;L\u2019Abri&nbsp;d\u2019espoir&nbsp;came together for a series of celebrations. There was a Christmas supper on December 22, a Christmas Eve devotional with hot chocolate and cookies, a special brunch and gifts on Christmas Day, and a New Year\u2019s celebration on December 31.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These&nbsp;weren\u2019t&nbsp;just meals or gatherings. They were opportunities to feel connected,&nbsp;welcomed&nbsp;and remembered during a season when everyone deserves to feel a little more at home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes, care means preparing for the moments no one hopes will happen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cI feel safe here. The staff do&nbsp;a great job; they are patient and understanding and<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>respond to our needs.\u201d \u2014&nbsp;Megan<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier in 2026, two&nbsp;L\u2019Abri&nbsp;d\u2019espoir&nbsp;caseworkers became trapped in the building\u2019s elevator during separate incidents. One was inside for 10 minutes; the other for 40.
