While the world watched this tragedy unfold, The Salvation Army in Newfoundland and Labrador mobilized more than 2,000 officers, employees, and volunteers across the province to provide practical and spiritual support to the thousands of travellers who found themselves stranded far from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twenty-five years later, the people of Gander gathered once again to remember those events, honour those affected, and reflect on the compassion that was displayed during a difficult time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the commemorations, The Salvation Army Gander Citadel Corps opened its doors for two days, welcoming visitors to view photographs, newspaper clippings, videos, and other displays highlighting The Salvation Army\u2019s response in September 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/salvationarmy.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/09\/IMG_2061-768x1024-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11344\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7500088914180033;width:203px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salvationarmy.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/09\/IMG_2061-768x1024-1.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/salvationarmy.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/09\/IMG_2061-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/salvationarmy.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/09\/IMG_2061-432x576.jpeg 432w, https:\/\/salvationarmy.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/09\/IMG_2061-1152x1536-1.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/salvationarmy.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/09\/IMG_2061-1536x2048-1.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/salvationarmy.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/09\/IMG_2061-scaled-1.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><sub><sup>Former mayor Claude Elliott with Major Morgan Hillier<\/sup><\/sub><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those who stopped by was former mayor Claude Elliott, who reflected on the immense community effort that sprang into action in the days following the attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe would have been in trouble without The Salvation Army,\u201d<strong> <\/strong>he says. \u201cNo one complained. The kindness and generosity that the passengers received [from the volunteers] made them more comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A member of the Virgin Airlines cabin crew, whose flight was diverted to Gander in 2001, also returned to pay her respects and revisit the community that welcomed her and her passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are no words,\u201d she says, sharing that coming back to Gander felt like stepping back in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Salvation Army also participated in the <em>\u201cUntold Stories\u201d<\/em> event at Gander International Airport on September 10. The world had become our neighbours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As speakers reflected on their experiences, The Salvation Army\u2019s impact was recognized as both meaningful and practical. One pilot recalls arriving in Gander and being met by Salvation Army personnel who provided food, clothing, and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Salvation Army was there to greet us and fed and clothed us for five days. They were saints.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another pilot remembers stepping off the aircraft to find volunteers waiting with food and water and describes The Salvation Army as \u201ca bright light\u201d during those uncertain days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The week of remembrance culminated with the town\u2019s official commemorative service on September 11. Representing The Salvation Army was Lt. Colonel Alf Richardson, who served as Divisional Commander in Central Newfoundland in 2001 and helped lead The Salvation Army\u2019s response. Colonels Scott and Michelle Rideout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the week\u2019s events, stories were shared, memories were revisited, and gratitude was expressed by those whose lives were touched by the kindness shown in September 2001.
