It\u2019s that time of the year: National Doughnut Day. Every first Friday of June, The Salvation Army commemorates this date to honour the brave work of the organization\u2019s \u201cDoughnut Lassies\u201d, who served snacks and provided comfort to soldiers on the front lines during the First World War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On June 5, Salvation Army locations and departments across Canada will take part in community events, giving out doughnuts to first responders and guests, while raising awareness of the organization\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Halifax, the Army\u2019s public relations team will be at the downtown ferry terminal handing out treats to morning commuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wendy Woodland, public relations officer, says this is a great opportunity to connect with the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is an awareness campaign. The doughnut symbolizes so much of the caring that The Salvation Army does and it ties back to something in our history that maybe not everybody knows about,\u201d Wendy shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the team has typically delivered pastries to media partners, this year will be the first time they take part in an outreach event of this kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere are a lot of people out there who may not have intersected with The Salvation Army very much, so it provides an opportunity for us to show them how the organization has been helping people for a long time,\u201d Wendy adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Commuters who encounter The Salvation Army at the ferry terminal will not only receive a fantastic breakfast snack but also a small pamphlet detailing the history and significance of the celebration, as well as information about ongoing programs and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wendy is looking forward to the day; she even plans to dress as a Doughnut Lassie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are hoping to send people off to work with a smile on their face.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n“It is an awareness campaign.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Out west, The Salvation Army in Prince George, B.C., will also hand out pastries to passersby outside its church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Visitors will receive information about the day and The Salvation Army, along with their treat. The event will feature a display of historical wartime photos and local radio will be on-site, inviting people to stop by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This initiative is supported by volunteers from the Army\u2019s Camp Mountainview, who will assist with distribution, as well as Tim Hortons, which is providing the doughnuts. In addition, treats will also be delivered to an elder care home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
