HALIFAX, Jan. 15, 2026 \u2013 Nova Scotians in urgent need of help with home heating costs can now apply for financial assistance through the 2026 Home Energy Assistance Top-up (HEAT) Fund.

The HEAT Fund, supported by the Government of Nova Scotia and Nova Scotia Power, has been a lifeline for those experiencing heat insecurity. The program provides emergency funds for low-income households struggling to pay for home heating (oil, propane, electric, wood, and natural gas).

\u201cThe HEAT Fund plays a crucial role in supporting Nova Scotians who suddenly find themselves in urgent need of home heating assistance,\u201d says Major Pam Goodyear, divisional secretary for public relations at The Salvation Army. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing more people reach out to us every day, and this generous support will make a meaningful difference for those experiencing heat insecurity throughout the province.\u201d

For more than 20 years, this program has helped keep thousands of individuals and families across Nova Scotia warm during the winter. The program runs annually starting in January, with a maximum assistance amount of $400 per household.

\u201cWe value this opportunity to work with The Salvation Army to help ensure Nova Scotia\u2019s most vulnerable citizens can access emergency funding to keep their homes warm and safe this winter,\u201d says Jill Balser, Minister of Service Nova Scotia. \u201cThis is all part of our work to help make life more affordable for more Nova Scotians.\u201d

The Salvation Army is deeply grateful for the Government of Nova Scotia\u2019s contribution of $800,000 to the HEAT Fund in 2026, alongside Nova Scotia Power\u2019s support of $300,000. Thanks to their commitment, this vital program will continue to assist those in need until the fund is fully depleted.
