When Wendy Compton first moved to her new apartment in Charlottetown, she didn\u2019t know anyone nearby with whom she could interact with. Over time, she became involved with The Salvation Army and is now one of the first participants in a new program to help seniors enjoy fellowship.<\/p>\n
The Salvation Army\u2019s \u201cForever Friends\u201d initiative provides local seniors with an opportunity to socialize, learn crafts, and enjoy snacks and refreshments every Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThe Salvation Army is about people helping people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Wendy was one of the initial participants to join this new program, which has been running for less than a month. Currently, they have an average of six members weekly, but it is expected to grow.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe only had three to start, but I think we are getting more as time goes on. It\u2019s popular,\u201d Wendy says.<\/p>\n
During the sessions, participants engage in arts and crafts, such as painting, drawing, crocheting, knitting, or embroidery. They take a mid-session break for tea, snacks, and conversation.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think Forever Friends could open up participants\u2019 lives. A lot of seniors are at home maybe feeling lonely and bored,\u201d Wendy adds. \u201cComing out here will not only help them to be active but also to make new friends and enjoy themselves for an afternoon. The friendships they can build through this program will probably last for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n
In Wendy\u2019s case, attending the program improves her overall mood.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt will make you feel good about life. It\u2019s a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\u201cBeing part of this makes me feel good. When I go back home, I feel relaxed, and I feel like I\u2019ve done something useful and purposeful,\u201d she shares.<\/p>\n
Even though this program is new, Wendy has been involved with The Salvation Army for two years. Initially, she would visit the Army to get bread and to go on walks. Over time, she started staying for coffee and made new friends.<\/p>\n
Now, she is part of a program that will help other seniors find friendships through The Salvation Army, just like she did. In addition, Wendy gives back by volunteering at the food bank twice a week.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would tell people to come out and try Forever Friends. It\u2019s worth getting out of the house for the conversation, company, and to refresh your brain. It will make you feel good about life. It\u2019s a lot of fun,\u201d Wendy says. \u201cThe Salvation Army is about people helping people, through the staff and volunteers. It\u2019s about friendship and being there for people.\u201d<\/p>\n
