The Salvation Army were honoured to have Miss Wheelchair Canada, Vahen King volunteering for our Annual Christmas Kettle campaign last weekend in Edmonton. She took time out of her busy schedule to answer a few of our questions on why she supports the Kettle Campaign.

    1. How long have you been volunteering at the Kettles?

This is only my second year, but I feel it’s a great way to step outside my busy and give back!

    1. What makes you choose The Salvation Army to volunteer?

I have a dear friend who volunteers with the Salvation Army, (Jim Brown) and he’s one of the most kind and genuine people I know, and talking with him piqued my interest about doing a kettle.

You see I also have my own non-profit, that keeps me super busy, but, I’ve said God I want you to show me ways that I can give out of my lack.  And He’s been showing me so many opportunities as to how I can do that, especially in the area of my time.

You see there’s always someone or something trying to control your time, but taking control of my time, and giving it to others where I can see my time making a difference, makes a huge difference and I feel so much better.

    1. What message would you like to share with other potential volunteers?

Tis the season to be jolly, but unfortunately, there’s a lot of sadness especially at this time of the year. And knowing I can spark a little joy in someone’s day brings me joy. And when you reach into people’s heart’s they will reach into their pockets for you!

I know I’m a little different, but I love making a difference, and I know The Salvation Army is doing just that, which is another reason why I volunteer.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

And if you’re thinking I could never do a singing kettle…Well, I’ll tell you what I told my friend who’s joining me this year…We’ll be great! These types of things don’t require much skill but just a desire to see people smile and have fun. This year consider giving a gift that keeps on giving! And if you can’t do a Christmas kettle, please plan to give to someone who is!
