Summer heats up the need for donations

As summer heats up, many of us are focused on vacations, beach days and patio nights. But with the joy of summer also comes the unfortunate reality that donations tend to drop during this time. While some of us are caught up in summer festivals, holidays and barbeques, many men and women are struggling to access basic necessities, particularly toiletries.

An appeal for donations during the summer months often results in a surge of food and clothing being dropped off at donation centres, however toiletries and basic hygiene items are often in short supply.

The Salvation Army in Miramichi, NB is urgently seeking donations for men’s and women’s toiletries. Daily use items such as toothpaste, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, razors, and brushes are often overlooked as items for donation, yet these are among the most needed.

“Many of us take having soap or toothpaste for granted,” says Shanon Ecker, of The Salvation Army Community Resource Centre. “Toiletries are essential and needed every day; to go without them can be very discouraging.”

Those struggling to make ends meet will often forfeit purchasing toiletries for food. Being able to access personal hygiene items not only benefits physical health but also mental health, as grooming and self-care can help to restore dignity to people in need.

Now in its 130th year of service in Miramichi, The Salvation Army provides community programs, emergency and disaster assistance, school supplies, food and clothing vouchers, and the iconic Sunshine Bags. While the items in Sunshine Bags vary from region to region, the Miramichi Salvation Army hopes to distribute the toiletries both in the Sunshine Bags and as needed.

Community support and donations are integral to the work of The Salvation Army. To donate, please drop off new and unopened toiletries to The Salvation Army Community Resource Centre, 231 Pleasant Street, Miramichi, NB.
